Man in Black part 20?
I know, I can't help myself as I've said before I am addicted to Johnny Cash, I have no idea why, I identify so much with this guy, I literally have nothing in common with him but I feel almost overwhelmingly linked to him sometimes. More footage from Johnny Cash at San Quentin. The interesting part about this footage is the song: "Orange Blossom Special"(first song in the above footage) does NOT appear on the CD of Johnny Cash at San Quentin. And in my opinion may just be the highlight of the concert. How this cannot be on the CD is beyond me, totally ridiculous oversight. "Hmmmm, what to remove from the CD, hmmm.....". Honestly, music executives or the powers that be that decide whats goes on these CD's must be brain dead, its the same deal when you listen to Best of CD's of lets say John Lennon or even Cat Stevens. Best of? Best of my ass, there are KEY SONGS MISSING ALWAYS.
If you don't like or appreciate Johnny Cash then you ain't welcome at my blog, so remove it from your bookmarks please, that may just well be most of you but I don't care! =)
Also, if you have the seen the movie "Walk the Line" where Joaquin Phoenix plays Johnny Cash you may well have been put off the real man. Don't let this affect you because even though I enjoyed the movie a fair bit it is most certainly not an accurate portrayal of Johnny Cash's personality because I don't believe Mr Cash was in the least bit backward as portrayed in the movie by Phoenix, he is certainly portrayed as a country "numpty" in this movie with his uhms and ehms and slowness. However, it does adequately portray certain historical facts I was unfamiliar with especially his growing loving relationship with June Carter.
More footage above from the Grand Ole Opry with his wife June Carter from 1968! Contrast the above footage with the infamous "Hurt" video below recorded 35 years later where June is featured at points in the video still by his side.
Hurt :- June Carter died soon after this video was released, Johnny Cash died only 4 months later. I can't watch this video without crying. Although Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) wrote this song, this is one DEFINITE instance where an artist makes a song he did NOT write his own. Clearly great video editing also (Mark Romanek)! Everyone that is anyone has already seen Hurt a bazillion times already however have you listened to Cash's version of "The first time ever I saw your face" from the same album? "American IV"? Some of you perhaps not! Check out below and be prepared to be blown away, yet again, the definitive version!(remember he is clearing singing about June here):-

Hello tillerman. Nice thinking persons blog - I like the fact that it's not all about bad beats and brags.
It's 7.10am - I just watched the 'Hurt' video. I am at my desk and am fighting back the tears. I read your post and realised there might be something in the Johnny Cash thing. This is one of the most powerful video/songs I have ever watched. This is already a great song but the video makes it special. I guess Cash knew he was very close to the end of his life.
You know, your comment is all I need to know that my post was worthwhile. Thanks for the comment Countryboy, and I'm very glad to have introduced you to Johnny Cash. And yes, he most certainly knew he was close to the end for all of American IV as well as the posthumously released American V.

You were right, it did make me smile. Awesome!
I actually started to hear Johnny Cash by reading your blog and got pretty addicted. Really good quality music, no-bullshit and raw talent..
the hurt video does gets to me every time, although i don't cry because i'm not a girl.
He really means it, lot of regrets, just remember it's all worth fuck all when your dead, enjoy the really good stuff.

Johnny Cash, what an awesome name for a professional poker player..! *chuckle*
Seriously tho, one of the very few real greats who used music & his life experiences to create the art.
I would like to disagree a little bit with the statement that he made the song his own. Not because I dont think that his versions isn`t brilliant, it most certainly is. But I dont think its better than Reznors. Both versions are brilliant in their own right.
No, I can't agree either. His version is far better than Reznor's. But if you say you are saying that partly because he created the song, wrote it etc. Then I will give you a 50/50 on it. But performance vs performance, no contest.
