Things
I've had guests staying for the past few weeks so not been playing much poker recently.
The Supreme Commander Beta came out yesterday. I played that for about 10 minutes but my friends computers all started crashing. The initial starting guy is a rip off from Transformers, it looks very much like Optimus Prime(Not Maximus =)) to me but it is still cool =) Didn't try it enough to have any thoughts beyond it will need a really good computer system and it is reasonably buggy. All to be expected from a Beta though.
I bought Company of Heroes, it seems very polished but I have not yet tried any multiplayer with it yet. Any comments on the multiplayer? Good or bad?
I got Caesar 4 as well which seems to be decent too. Caesar 3 was a great sim game. I haven't played it enough to tell if it as good or better yet as I tilted hard on the 3rd scenario when I couldn't get my Aquaducts/Reservoirs to work.
I have several games waiting to play on the XBOX 360 including Dead Rising and Saints Row but my TV right now is way too bad to play them on. I am getting a Sony 55" or 70" SXRD LCOS Rear Projection TV which has just come out in Europe. Hopefully have it within the next week or two.
My eyes are slowly getting better. I had my best vision today when I woke up, this was only temporary though but at least I can see how it will probably end up once the dry eyes clear up and the healing process is over.
I've seen a few movies recently such as :-
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby - A good Will Ferrell movie roughly on par with Anchorman. (7/10)
Children of Men - A decent Sci-Fi movie with a 1984 type theme. It has some amazing CGI scenes which don't look like CGI, very naturally done. This film could have been much better. The scene where the army stop fighting and stand silent in awe of the baby is ridiculously bad and semi spoiled the movie for me. (7/10)
The Departed - A good return to form for Martin Scorcese which features Leonardo De Caprio's best ever performance. Although he will never replace Robert De Niro he was infinitely better in this Scorcese film than he was in The Aviator or Gangs of New York. This is Scorcese's best film since Casino. Mark Wahlberg is also particularly good in this film. (8/10)
A Scanner Darkly - Another decent Sci-Fi movie based on the Novel by Philip K. Dick (same guy who inspired Bladerunner, Total Recall, Minority Report). It has a very weird graphical filtering effect throughout the movie I guess in an attempt to get closer to the feel of a Philip K. Dick novel. I felt it could have been better but it had a lot going for it and I felt pretty good after having seen it. There were several very funny scenes too. (7.5/10)
Superman Returns - I was looking forward to this movie but always knew it was going to be a very ABC, formulaic interpretation of Superman especially since it was directed by Bryan Singer(who had already done a really boring X-Men movie). It did however start off pretty well but totally lost it thereafter with a really super poor Lex Luthor(Kevin Spacey was good but had nothing to work with) plot line. Brandon Routh was a very poor substitute for Christopher Reeve and Singer just shouldn't be allowed to direct the next one. Let Richard Donner have another another go. (5.5/10)
The Hunger - Amazingly I only just saw this movie a few days ago for the first time. I am a big fan of the horror genre so not sure how this slipped me by. I always knew of it but had assumed I had seen it as a child. I guess not. It is amazingly directed with each scene almost crafted like a piece of art. Very stylish. There is no way I could have guessed this was a Tony Scott film, it feels nothing like any of his other movies, that is for sure. David Bowie is perfectly cast for this movie and Susan Sarandon is also great with an amazing pair of eyes. Plot and ending could have been better however. My friend thought it was directed by Ridley Scott (Tony Scott's brother) which is easily understood when you notice the very Bladerunnerish type indoor scenes as well as the final outdoor shot which could have easily been part of Bladerunner. Bladerunner came first though so we can see who was inspired by who.(7.5/10)
Crank - A decent action movie with Jason Statham(The Transporter). A bit like the movie Speed but this time with some poison in his veins which can only be stopped by keeping his adrenaline high.(6.5/10)
The Black Dahlia - A Brian De Palma film that is based on the real life Black Dahlia case but is totally fictionalized in this movie. I don't like Josh Hartnett much and definitely don't like Scarlett Johansson. I don't know why he chose such wooden actors but oh well. It could have been a lot better but as usual with Brian De Palma, it does ooze style and has lots of great scenes. (7.5/10)

Optimus Prime perhaps? :)

The beta for Supreme Commander hasnt been released yet.
Phillip K Dick books are excellent, my 'desert island' pick if I could only choose one author's stuff.
None of the films that are based on his work come quite close enough to his visions for me, but if you found them interesting why not check out the books behind them? I really recommend 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep', 'The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch' and 'Clans of the Alphane Moon' to get you started. Although some of the themes of his books are quite heavy I think the humour element sets them apart from similar writing.
All the best, hope your eyes are fully recovered soon :-)
I think The Hunger pwnz those other films as a piece of high level film making. You fogot to mention The Prisoner but maybe that doesn't count as movie being a series...its still awesome tho!
Your post about the SupCom beta certainly caused quite a stir on several forums.
People are voracious for any details about the game. Pitifully little is really known right now.
did you read the nl sklansky book yet?
Hi Ian!
Talking about gaming, do you follow WCG? I bet your fellow Grubby is gonna make it far again ^^
The multiplayer functionality of CoH is the worst i've ever seen, i could quite literally make a list of over 101 things wrong with CoH right now. Don't get me wrong, it's an awesome game if nobody drops, and things go smoothly, but there are way too many glaring problems (especially with the terrible UI) to go un-noticed.
As for the supcom beta, here's a topic on the GPG forums (Gas Powered Games, official Supreme Commander site), with at least 5 posts from a mod: http://garage.gaspowered.com/?q=node/6768
For a quick read, the moderator wrote:
"We're not using an NDA for the beta program."
"Nope, Tillerman is probably correct - all of you (including Carnagal) are wrong.
Tillerman probably played a beta, but not the "closed beta" that has been under discussion here.
The beta Tillerman likely played through his friend is a very small "stage 1" beta going on right now. As I've mentioned several times, there are multiple parts to the beta. The one all the fan sites and Garage have talked about is not the start ("stage 1") of the beta.
We're getting lots of issues dealt with in this early stage 1 beta, which will hopefully mean those in the "closed beta" won't need to deal with them and can focus more on gameplay issues.
Emails for the "closed beta" have still not gone out yet. As mentioned, I'll post a new thread in the Beta section when they do.
Oh, and I deleted most of the off-topic posts."
"It was invitation only (and no more invitation possible, now that it has started).
As mentioned, it is a very small, controlled group of external people that give us a first pass "
fuck dlp
yay plasma or lcd
I got the CoH as well, but haven't tried it out online.
Don't even know where to hang out there :|

Hey Tiller,
Maybe you remember me maybe not from the war2 days on kali. I went by SC~Terror (shadowcouncil). I wanted some advice on a poker related matter. I have been playing off and on at party, typically $200 nl. I have about a 20k bankroll and wanted a bit of advice on where to play (site) and what limits you would recommend to maximize earning potential. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. If there is a better way to chat with you let me know.
talladega nights was the shit
yeah kudos to the guy who recommended u read The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch - that is a great book. But as you'd already be familiar with Bladerunner - read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep first. You'll prefer the Three Stigmata book, but Sheep is very good... and will prepare you to fully appreciate the weirdness in Three Stigmata.
I must say though - I didn't like the movie of A Scanner Darkly at all. I read the book first... and after youve read the book, the movie just does nothing for you. Problem is the viewpoint - its an inherently first-person book. Dick gets you inside the head of a person who is going schizo and losing touch with reality due to drugs. Right inside his head... When you watch the film, its really more like a 3rd person viewpoint - us watching these other drug-fucked guys on screen. Its way different when you read the book and you ARE one of those drug-fucked losers... The movie lacks so much of what made the book brilliant, that I was pretty disappointed in the movie.
Its very very difficult to make a movie tho, from something that needs to be told in 1st person perspective... very few movies have pulled it off successfully - so this result is not surprising.
I just bought "Do Android Dream of Electric Sheep". Currently reading it.
If I get into Dick(hehe), I'll check out "The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch" next.

TILLERMAN!!!
YOU WERE MY BIGGEST IDOL BACK IN WARCRAFT III! I DECIDED TO PLAY HUMAN JUST BECAUSE YOU DID (EVEN THOUGH IT WAS MY BIGGEST WC3 MISTAKE).
DO YOU STILL CARE ABOUT THE LADDER AND STUFF?
AND DID YOU REALLY SAY "WHAT CAN I DO? THE UNDEAD ARMY IS BETTER THAN MY ARMY!"??
THANKS!
SORRY FOR THE CAPSLOCK.
TillerMaN, can you send me some 1.04 replays of you? lol

Hey TillerMaN, can you post up a copy of your spreadsheet? I'm looking for a really easy to use spreadsheet that will automatically keep track of cumulative earnings per session, hourly rate, etc.
If you can do that, that would be awesome. I'm walking in the same path you did during your first 2 months of playing. I'd like to keep track of my records now.
