Laser Eye Surgery

I needed new glasses as they were pretty badly scratched and very slightly under prescribed. I only needed glasses for long distance so never needed them inside apart from when watching television. Instead of getting new glasses I decided to go for Laser Eye Surgery with Wavefront technology.

My vision has improved considerably for long distance roughly on par with my glasses but all sight including long distance still has an element of non sharpness especially noticeable at close up distances for instance writing this post all the letters are soft and slightly blurry.

My left eye is healing faster than my right eye and has considerably sharper vision but still not near perfect. My prescription before the Lasik was roughly -1.5. I have been to the optometrist 3 days in a row and I am going in today again to see the surgeon about smoothing out the surface of the right eye. The optometrist assures me all this is perfectly normal but I haven't noticed any significant improvement in my eye sight since waking up on the morning after surgery. She said my left eye had better than normal vision right now but thats only from reading charts and when everything is slightly blurry/hazy but you can read charts who cares? It is far from the quality of vision I had with glasses looking at the same chart.

Anyone got any experience of this? If so post in comments.

UPDATE
It seems I have small wrinkles on my right hand eye which is a complication that sometimes occurs after flap replacement. I have been given drops to hopefully deal with it and have another appointment in 1 weeks time to see if there is an improvement. If not I think there are procedures that can be taken to smooth the wrinkles. Anyone with any experiences with Laser Eye Surgery post in comments.

My wife got it done at a place in the west end of Glasgow and she loved the results. Perfect vision and no hassles after a few days.

Where did you go? Was one of the opticians a smokin hot blonde girl?

Personally, I'm minus 4.5 and still wouldn't get it done!

Had the same laser eye surgery done at Optical Express on Tuesday 19th September.
24 hrs later first check up eyes tested in Edinburgh - line better than 20/20 vision (6/5 vision), same ruffle on my right eye but could notice a big improvement especially car number plates, teletext, computer screens.
Had to go back 3 days later to get this checked and all was normal ruffle had healed and eyes tested again - 6/5 vision on each eye seperately and 6/4 vision on both eyes combined (smallest line on charts!)
Best advice i can give you is make sure you put all three sets of drops in your eyes religiously as instructed for first week then i am currently using just the blink drops every couple of hours until my next appointment in a weeks time
My prescription was roughly -1.00 before surgery and feel now my eyes are a big improvement and everything is so sharp now.
Now i can even see the poker screen at the Maybury without squinting from the other side of the room!

Hope everything works out for you

That sounds like a really, really scary experience. But everyone I've known that's done the Lasik thing has loved the results and had no complaints.

It seems you and I have the same problem with our vision... close-range is just fine, but anything more than 5 feet or so and I need my glasses. Maybe it's a computer thing.

Hey, thanks for info.

Everyone has so positive experiences so soon after generally. I mean I can see substantially better long distances. No doubt about that but I'm concerned mostly about the deteriation in medium to short distance vision. For instance, computer screens especially. Before I could see perfectly with or without glasses, perfect sharpness and perfect clarity but now there is ghosting/haze/blurriness.

I think it got 3% better today from yesterday but it is so marginal I'm not sure.

Glad it worked out nicely for you Deryk so quickly. How was your vision for close up computer screen use before your surgery for instance playing poker and reading small text on the computer screen as opposed to 4-5 days after surgery?

I am using my drops religiously and doing everything precisely by the book =)

so you're a tight/aggressive surgery patient?

Not that I have any knowledge or anything but I will maybe get the surgery eventually.

If you read the wikipedia thing on it, it makes it sound so absolutely terrible. But then people that have had it all rave about. My guess is that once the crap you're going through passes, you'll be so happy you'll neglect to mention it any more keeping the cycle of uncertainty going

Before surgery the computer screen had to be quite close to make everything out, i struggled a bit with the small print but now i can see small print perfectly fine. Everything is so much sharper and clearer now.

Not a computer problem, just maybe computer-related. I see a lot of computer junkies turning near-sighted.

LOL, please tell me that was a measured test and not an 'off the top of the head' guess. If so how on earth can you wake up and think, 'hmmmm, eyesight is about 3% better today' ;o)

Deryke I'm struggling to place who you are in my mind. I'm Kenny, Malcy's brother - not been to the maybury much in 2006 admittedly.

Tiller,

I had mine done almost 2 years ago. I could see a lot better right off the operation table, it was amazing.

It did take about a week to have them tune right up and about a week to a week and a have to have them not get tired anymore. I found they would feel tired especially when looking at my computer screen.

My eyesight was something like -5 or so in each eye and I had halos at night for almost 2 months. I was told they coudl last UPTO 30 days so I thought it was permenant, I was happy when they went away.

Anyways, I'm sure you'll be in tip top shape within 2 weeks of the operation.

Good luck!!

Tiller, we need you to make a post about all this US Port Security Bill nonsense.

I'm sure you've been reading about it. Your thoughts on the matter could be insightful. Particularly, how do you think this will effect the "softness" of the online gaming environment, as well as the availability of competition?

As a US-based pro, naturally I'm freaking. If the legislation is as hard-hitting as everyone thinks it's going to be, and I can't find a way to circumvent it from within US borders, I'll probably be moving to Toronto.

Myself and others following in my footsteps wouldn't be able to fully escape the stink cloud, though. Nobody will. There would be far fewer online players with the exit of the US market, and everyone's speculating that losing the US market will seriously damage the fish:shark ratio, making the environment far less profitable for us.

I see this as a really dark time for the poker community, and I think it's clear that everyone will be affected, American or otherwise. "Land of the Free." ...

Anyway, I'm looking for someone I can trust outside the US that'd be willing to help with my monthly transactions in the event that these poker rooms do start restricting transactions to US-based players. If you're willing, you can contact me by AIM or e-mail.

Topher if it kicks in and you need to manage a foriegn account I could help as long as it wasn't too labourious. It's my understanding that you are still many months away from facing this difficulty.

I don't have time to write about it just now but I have serious concerns that this law change in America will bring about the demise of online poker as we know it. Taking even 60-70% of the American market out of online poker would be very distructive :(

You will know me always at the cash table wih the big stack :)

Anyway how come havent seen you or Malky at the Maybury for a while?

We've both been concentrating on our online games. The maybury is more fun but I really feel the key to making money at poker is to crack multi-table cash online and that's what we've been doing. I've been keeping a blog since summer to track my results and I'm having an absolute nightmare this month. Malcy is doing well at the moment :)
