High Stakes Poker Third Episode

Well, I just finished watching the 3rd episode of High Stakes poker.

Again, pretty interesting. I don't understand Barry Greenstein's call with the flush draw when he was probably drawing to 7 outs or perhaps a 3-1 underdog vs a set. Would make a bit more sense but only a little if it had gone, bet by Barry, push by Daniel then you have less info. But, bet by Daniel, raise by Barry, push by Daniel. Not too many hands Daniel can have.

I also think the push by Jennifer was a mistake, and that it was a clear call in cash game NL on a board of K73 rainbow. That move makes much more sense if the board had a 2 flush or 2 connected cards. You would have to be sure one of your 2 opponents had K7, K3, 73, or 33(not at all likely) to make it a more profitable play than cold calling. I agree either way, both players will put her on a big hand, but at least you give either player a chance to hit trips or two pair on the turn and the chance to make a big mistake of their own. If you cold call you may also pull Eli into the pot when he has a hand like AK or KQ.

I guess Greenstein's call was partly to say "stop pushing me around please". Maybe he has good reason to put Negreanu on a total bluff here too.

I didn't think a lot of Harman's play either. She's playing $100k NL games and I'm not though. I'd be pretty tempted to just bet something straight off the bat - half the pot or so. Let TT make his raise, let AK make his call, then call. Of course, that relies on not sitting there pretending to be completely disinterested with your bit of paper.

Harman's strongest game is limit, I guess in Limit the raise would've made more sense.

The call made Greenstein look like one of those NL25 guys who gladly go all-in with flush draws. I bet greenstein thought he had more outs than he did, maybe he put Daniel on some pocketpair and figured his overcards were outs too... Dunno, seemed silly and I really feel bad for Negreanu <3

as far as I can see, Greenstein would have put Negreanu on a pocket pair with a club

On the hand Barry called all-in with AJ, I believe the action on the flop went: Daniel checks, Barry bets about half the pot, Daniel check-raises to "1 million" (LOL, ok Daniel stop bragging). The pot had been re-raised by Barry preflop, so Barry had about 20K invested when he had to decide whether or not to call. I also think Daniel deliberately over-raised in order to represent a hand that wasn't as big and wanted Barry out. Still, I was very surprised by not only Barry's call, but the speed with which he called. There are some hands where Barry is a small favorite, small dog, or relative coinflip against, but the downside is brutal if he has 7 outs. Barry is obviously a very bright guy and any player who beats those huge games deserves a tremendous amount of respect and dare I say, the benefit of the doubt. However, this play, and to a somewhat lesser degree the hand where he call's Doyle allin for $100K w/QQ were pretty suspect.

Barry's call definitely looked like he was just sick of Daniel pushing him around and decided let's do it with the nut flush draw and I believe 2 overs (at least 1). Jen is a Limit player so her bets in NLHE aren't always going to be perfect (as far as I know/in my opinion).

p.s. gimmedawatch remember Doyle did the exact same thing with AK in the ffirst episode (Ted Forrest said outloud that he must have had AK and Doyle admitted that Ted was right), so Barry could have been a favourite with QQ.

Anon, yes I remember Doyle's play and thought of that, considering that plays like this might have an impact on Barry's decision, as Barry has played alot w/Doyle and knows his tendencies. However, Doyle did not "do the exact same thing" in both hands. When he had AK, there was simply a raise preflop, and then he makes a huge re-raise push. In the hand vs Barry, Doyle raised in early position, got a couple callers, and was then re-raised by Barry. Doyle has to know that there's at least a decent chance Barry has a big pair here an pushes anyway. Barry would have to include not only AK in Doyle's hand range, but a couple smaller pairs as well for the call to be viable. Barry knows better than any of us, but this seems like a stretch for 150 big blinds all-in preflop.

The mistake Jennifer made in her hand was not betting out. If she bets out, Eli may perceive her as weak and raise her, at which point Farha may call or reraise and then Harman can push with much more money out there. If Eli folds to her bet, Harman will at least take a large pot off Farha cause the strength of her hand is much more deceptive.

If she decided to just cold call Farha's bet, I think he would have just shut down as well. Farha is very loose but also makes very big lay downs at times. He wouldn't have put another dollar in the pot if Harman just cold called his bet.
