Stuff

The coffee bet I had with my friend has been mutually cancelled, he missed Coca Cola and I missed coffee. We both went for a couple of weeks without caffeine and I personally didn't notice much during it, no shaking, no headaches etc. I also couldn't find any evidence anywhere that there were big benefits from quitting. All anyone ever said was that they slept better or other minimal effects such as that. I have never had trouble sleeping period.

I rebooked my driving lessons and driving test (2nd December). I had been taking them over the past year but after I failed my last test I just never bothered rebooking the test again (it is a six week wait each time). I finally motivated myself to go for it again, hopefully this time I pass with flying colours. Fact is I don't need a car in Glasgow/UK, but if I had one I would be more motivated to get out and about more, I'm sure =)

I was ordering a game at Play.com and came across what looks like a cool gadget called a Powerball. Check out the link on the page that shows the Powerball World Champion in action getting it up above 15,000 RPM's. There are two videos, the other one is hidden in the pop up video box. This is really nerdy I agree but I bought one more out of curiosity than anything else and of course to SMASH THE WORLD RECORD!!!!!!!!

Quake 4 is decent in single player and a bit better than Doom 3 in that respect. I have not tried either in multiplayer so can't comment on that aspect. I have no motivation to try either. It definitely won't be better than Quake or Quake 2 multiplayer so why even bother. Age of Empires 3 is still not out in the UK. Black and White 2 is very boring. Serious Sam 2 is ok but not as polished and fun as the originals which is a shame. Looking forward to X3 : Reunion and Civilization 4 which have both gone gold and I have pre ordered.

Poker is going really well this month, so far about 25% higher than my previous best month so that is great. Hope it holds out until the end of the month and I can avoid the dreaded guaranteed final losing day of the month anomaly =) One of my TFT's breaking was not good timing at all. I like playing 6 tables, 4 is just a little too boring for me and I hate overlapping windows.

Some people wonder what my poker nicks are on different sites well here are all the ones I use, it is no secret. TillerMaN99 at Ladbrokes, INTillerMaN at the Prima Network, TillerMaN at Pokerstars, AlanMoore or NealElias at Cryptologic, NealElias or LinSearles at Partypoker, AlanMoore at FullTilt, TillerMaN99 at Eurobet and INTillerMaN at Ultimatebet.

My new TFT just arrived. Works great, no dead pixels. Bit brighter than the old one but I guess brightness fades after 1 year+.

World Series of Poker Main Event

Main Event - $10000 No Limit Hold 'Em Part 3
Main Event - $10000 No Limit Hold 'Em Part 4

This is episodes 3 and 4 of the WSOP main event which is torrents 23 and 24.

Episode 3 is great as it features Phil Hellmuth for a large part of it with some amazingly hilarious outbursts and antics. That guy is pure gold. The coverage of the main event is far superior to any of those bracelet events, better atmosphere and more meaningful coverage from the early parts of the tournament.

There was also two torrents released for the latest episodes of the Poker Superstars tournament. They are down to the last 16 in this one with 4 handed tables, these two torrents feature David Sklansky, Huck Seed, Johnny Chan and Mike Sexton battling it out. David Sklansky is amazingly arrogant in his interview, claiming to easily be one of the top 5 poker players in the world.

Poker Superstars Ep 31
Poker Superstars Ep 32

I lost my Dual Screen set-up yesterday as one of my screens broke so back to single monitor for a week until the new one arrives. Really sucks to go back to one monitor =)

Hand Analysis

A lot of people who visit this site are obviously wanting to see more hand analysis and discussion about poker however there are a couple of problems with doing this as far as I can see.

1. Most hands are terribly uninteresting especially ones that turn into big pots, set vs AA, draw vs overpair, draw vs set. Yawn...

2. Most hands are too complex to analyze in No Limit with several different avenues being correct depending on circumstances and actions. It is why when you ask a top player for advice on a hand the invariable response is "It Depends".

3. I play relatively high stakes online where information is very important and to be honest I don't want my opponents reading my hands and gaining important information on how I play in certain circumstances. The playerbase is small at high stakes and you play with the same people too often. Some people who I play with have Blogs where they discuss hands sometimes and the information you can glean is too useful.

However, with all that being said I will still post some hands and analysis whenever I feel it is "interesting" and "useful" to someone learning or trying to improve, not very debatable as far as correct actions are concerned and of course not harmful to me in the future (which is why player names are left blank) =)

So with that all said and done here is one that fits the criteria :-

(5 Handed, 10/20 NL Game, $2000 buy in)

UTG limps for $20, next player limps, as does the button. The small blind folds and I check in the BB with AT.

The flop is 47T. There is $90 in the pot.

I bet $60 and the pre flop UTG calls the $60 (He has $2135 and is a good player). The next player calls the $60 and raises $120 more. He is a semi short stack and after his raise he still has $618 left(I have no information on this player). The button now cold calls the $180 raise, this player has $1885 left and is also an unknown quantity. The action is now back to me with $570 in the pot.

Now generally, in No Limit especially at higher stakes you do everything you possibly can to not turn limped pots into huge pots with mediocre holdings. However, this is only a general rule and you should recognize situations where you must deviate from the safest road to maximize your profits. In this situation it is now very important to reraise with your hand to try and knock out 1 or 2 of your opponents who almost certainly have draws on this flop.

A quick hand analysis tells me that the UTG could have a wide variety of hands but most likely some draw such as 56, 89, 68, any gutshot such as J8 etc or of course a club draw. I fully expect him to fold to any reraise I make here. The semi short stack who made the reraise can have any T here as well as a club draw, any open ended straight draw and perhaps 444 or 777. But on balance a reraise with my holding is almost certainly correct versus him also. The final player on the button who has cold called the $180 is the slightly more worrying factor to me as even though a likely holding for him is a club draw, it is also feasible he is now trapping with a big hand such as 444 or 777.

It is pretty clear you have to raise here to shut out draws and if you can't do that at least you have made them pay big to hit the turn with their 4-1 or 5-1 shot. How much to raise though? The important factor to me here is to take advantage of the short stack and use it against the other players. For instance if I just raise to $1000, the UTG will fold, the short stack will call all in and the button will fold any draw but bust me for a full stack when he has a monster. However, if I raise decently but smaller than the short stack has left something nice and likely could happen. Let's see :-

I called the $120 reraise and then reraised a further $360. This gave the UTG player a $480 raise to call which he wisely folded instantly too. The short stack then just called my reraise which as it turns out will be a clear mistake for him leaving himself with only $258. The button then cold calls this reraise taking us to the turn and creating a $1770 pot. The nice thing that could have happened would have been if the short stack had just pushed all in instead of calling my reraise. This would have given the button a real tough decision as on this site I would have then been given the opportunity of reraising all in if the button cold called this reraise. Unfortunately that did not happen.

The turn was the 6. Giving us a board of 47T6.

The pot is $1770. I have $1496 left, the short stack has $258 and the button has $1525 left.

The shortstack is not a consideration any more as he does not have enough chips to make us fold obviously. All concern is now with the button who probably has a club draw but could still have something like 89, 58c, 53c, 444, 777 or some weirdly played 2 pair. Even though these are all fairly unlikely we will be able to eliminate them completely with the following safely play which will maximize our winnings but minimize our losses when he has us beat already.

The play is take advantage of the short stack who is almost certainly going to move all in if we check to him with his paltry $258. If this happens we will be able to see how the button feels about his hand. A call will almost certainly mean he is still drawing and a big raise will mean he has us beat and is desperate to now shut out our drawing hand (as he would perceive it to be).

The action that took place was that I checked, the short stack moved all in for $258 and the button quickly called the $258. At this point I instantly put him on a flush draw and reraised all in to try and shut him out.

The pot was now $3782 and he would have to call $1267 to hit his flush. With only 3-1 pot odds he will certainly be making a huge error if he calls to hit here as he needs 4.1-1 pot odds just to break even if he has 9 outs. He thought for a long long time and then correctly folded.

The river was the 3.

The short stack turned over QT and I scooped a pot of $3780 for $1744 pure profit from what started out as a regular run of the mill limped pot. The button then started cursing in chat that he had a club draw and would have hit on the river =).

Stuff that some of you may have done different that you might want to think about.

1. Some of you would have folded on the flop and some of you would have called. Calling is almost certainly the worst of these two plays.

2. If you had in fact raised as I did a large proportion of you would then have bet out on the turn trying to protect your hand. But you would have had to bet so much on the turn that you would lose a full stack every time the button has you already beat. And if you don't bet huge on the turn you will give the button odds to hit his flush anyway. Neither of these scenarios are appealing.

3. If you had instead checked the turn like I did, some of you would almost certainly have just called the short stacks all in along with the button, scared of the already huge pot and how vulnerable your hand feels in this situation.

It is even harder to play a hand like this well when you are multi-tabling and that is why you are able to play much better the less tables you have open at once. It is way too easy to just fold on the flop here if you are 8 tabling and not analyze it all properly. I only play 5-6 tables max and always give myself a good amount of time to act so I don't miss good opportunities to maximize profits.

Whenever you play a hand exactly like you would if the cards were turned face up such as this one, you are playing exactly in line with Sklansky's Fundamental Theorem of Poker which you can read in Chapter 3 of Sklansky's "The Theory of Poker". In this case I did exactly that.

The sad part though is that for every time you do get it all right the players will sometimes still call, hit their outs and bust you anyway =) But hey, "thatsssssssssssssssssssss Poker!"

Poker winnings and Tax

I am interested in the tax laws of the various countries around the world with regards to poker income. For instance in my country, the United Kingdom, we are not required to pay taxes on poker winnings or in fact any gambling winnings at all including stuff like sports betting, lottery wins etc. I would not go as far as saying it is absolutely written in law that this is the case but it is almost certainly the case.

A short article on UK tax laws regarding poker by Joe Beevers.

Of course I am not just going on this, I have contacted an accountant who confirms this to be the case and also my financial adviser at the bank also confimed this when I was opening up savings accounts (In fact, for my employment status I had to claim I was unemployed which I was told to do by my financial adviser). Most people need to pay tax on interest acrued from a savings account but I am able to claim the full gross amount of interest generated at the end of the year.

So, we are pretty clear on the UK tax situation. So what is it like in your country? I would be interested to hear some detail on it if possible in the comments if you know anything about it. Also any further info on UK tax laws regarding poker would be great too.

So Sweden? Holland? Denmark? Norway? USA? Australia? South Africa? What is the deal with your countries =) Let me know, I'm curious.

Partypoker / Skins Split

Well this sucks really bad! If you didn't hear, Partypoker has seperated themselves from the rest of the skin network (Coral Eurobet, Empire Poker, Intertops etc). What this means is that the playerbase has dramatically shrunk for the skin sites by about a factor of 10. Not only that but on Eurobet (the skin I use) you cannot access the Poker Cashier to withdraw. It is frozen. You can still play with your money and see your entire roll if you sit at a limit table so at least it is all still there ... for now =)

As soon as the poker cashier is unfrozen I will be withdrawing all my money as soon as possible. There is just zero reason to play now that the skins network is so empty for higher limits.

A press release was put out that explains the move a bit.

Dear Mr Girdwood

We would like to inform you that unfortunately, last night technical problems were encountered with the cashier and transfering money to and from poker.

Due to this the cashier has been disabled for all poker transactions until Monday when the poker provider hopes to have resolved and cleared the problem.

We apologise for the inconvenience caused.

Kind regards,
Jessica

Got a PSP!

My psp came a couple of days ago and I have been getting pretty good use out of it. I never really expected all that much before I bought it but when I saw the demo disc with the trailer for Spiderman I was really impressed with the quality of the screen.

Even though I was impressed with the movies on it I won't be buying UMD movies for it as I think it is just too crazy to buy DVD's and then the same movie again on UMD for an even more expensive price. Screw that. No thanks. I have hacked my system back to 1.5 (I made the mistake of upgrading to 2.0) so I can use homebrew applications on it like emulators for older systems.

I converted one DVD I own to AVI then to MP4 but I mucked it up somehow and only had 39 minutes of the movie however that 39 minutes did work great and will spur me on to try converting more of my movie collection to watch on my PSP. I also bought a 2GB Memory Stick Duo which kind of blows away the 32MB one. What a con that is, 32MB and both sticks of memory look absolutely identical? Money grubbing Sony bastards.

Most of my use of it will be for games. It is still a new system so there isn't a great library of games yet but I got the following :-

Ridge Racer - This is great and has taken a bunch of tracks spanning every Ridge Racer game and put them into one game. It has a lot of replay value as there is tons of game content to unlock. Only slight problem I have with it is that drifting is way too easy.

Wipeout Pure - Again, amazing replay value with a lot of content to unlock with 5 possible league speeds. I am only on speed level 2 and I find it very fast already which is great.

Lumines - A Tetris style puzzle game which I have not yet put too much time into yet but it looks addictive and very polished.

Burnout Legends - A mix of racing and mayhem. It has high production values but I do have some problems with the feel of the racing part of the game. It seems if you hit the sides and stuff it kind of just pulls you round most of the time like a scalextrix track.

Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee - This game is called Everybody's Golf in the UK. I assume they are the same as I can't find it on gamespot and this game seems to be the same one as far as screenshots are concerned. Weird. Anyway, not played it much yet so can't really comment.

Hope some really awesome games come out for it. Too many driving games so far!

Bad beats and Good beats

Today was a pretty wild and swinging day. I played for about 3 and a half hours earlier in the day and was breaking even after an hour or so and then came the dreaded bad run. It lasted for about 2 hours and I decided to quit and take a breather rather than chase 5 buyins back.

The bad beats that made me quit were actually over the course of a few hands :-

(8 Handed, $4000 20/40 NL game)
I pick up TT in early middle position after two people have limped for $40. I limp also and the button then makes it $240(6*BB) to go. Both limpers call and I also decide to call. We all have $4000 stacks.

The flop comes :- KT5.

A good flop for my hand. The first 2 limpers check, I also make the obligatory check to the pre flop raiser. He bets out $680 into a $1020 pot. The first limper then raises to $1680, the next limper folds and it is up to me facing a $1680 reraise. The player who made the raise is how shall I put it, very dodgy and could easily have a vast array of hands here which I crush. I have an easy decision versus this guy but I am slightly worried about the pre flop raiser but not overly so as he probably only has AK, AA or a bunch of other hands he might bet out with once everyone checks to him like any A.

I push all in for my entire stack, the raiser calls fast and I put him on KKK, AA or AKx. The limp reraiser calls instantly also turning it into a $12300 pot.

The cards are turned over before showdown on this site so I see in fact that the initial raiser has 74 and the reraiser has AA.

Oh my, nice reads. Lol. At least I had the limp reraiser beat as I suspected I did. Impossible to put the initial raiser on a flopped flush however.

The turn is the J and the river is the 2. No improvement for me and a very oddly played AA scoops the $12300. I got a small bit of satisfaction from seeing the 47s not win either, I have to admit =)

This type of bad beat is what I call a situational bad beat, one in which you are behind but you have to play for all your money because you are going to be winning way too often to fold.

The next hand is what made me quit for the session, it felt like a movie script hand!

(5 Handed, $2000 10/20 NL game)

I have to quickly explain a hand before the bad beat for it to make sense.

I pick up AA and raise $80, it gets folded round to a half stack who goes all in for $1200 with 99. I call it and win the pot building my stack to approximately $3200.

The very next hand I pick up AA again. Someone else who has a $4000 stack raises to $80, I reraise to $280. Everyone folds back to him and he quickly makes it $780, another $500 back to me. Now normally I would never push here even though I'm 95% sure he has KK because it makes it too easy for him to fold (people can actually fold KK up here especially to a 1.6* stack). However, because of the previous hand where I had AA I decided that since he has KK now he is going to find it impossible to laydown not believing I can have AA twice in a row. I push all in and he calls instantly. The pot is $6400 and the cards get turned over and I see that I am indeed up against KK. The flop is 373. The turn is a 4. The river is a very painful K. I was already down a lot =). I quit soon after.

I recorded my losses and went and did some other stuff. I came back later on and started up again. I got going pretty good from the off and then the following hand happened, this is the good beat :-

(4 Handed, $2000 10/20 NL game)

I have a $2800 stack at my table which is comprised of myself and 3 good players, no fish here. I pick up KQ in the BB and the first player in makes it $100(5*BB) to go which is called by one other player and myself.

The flop comes TJ6. I check and the initial raiser bets out $280, the other player in the hand folds and I decide to see the turn. I call. The turn is a 9. The bingo card. I check to the raiser. He pauses and bets $780, a strong bet. I pretty much have him on a set here, the bet seems too confident for just AA or KK. I decide to push him all in fully expecting a call from any set. He pauses and calls, the pot is now around $5800.

The river is a jack. He has hit the bingo card, the jack of diamonds, giving himself quad jacks =(

So why is this a good beat you say? Well I forgot to tell you the suits on board.

The flop read TJ6.
The turn was the 9.
The river was the J.

And in my hand I held the KQ.

=)!!

My straight flush beats his quads >_<

I recovered my losses for the day and managed to finish around even which made me happy enough for the day.

Last day of month Anomaly

Yet again I lose on the very last day of the month. Such a dampener to lose in your final session every frigging month. You start every new month psychologically damaged =)

I know its meaningless, after all its just one big game but still these things piss me off =)

6 months in a row I have lost on the final day, that is not at all likely. In fact, I worked out it wasn't at all likely with the help of some people on my IRC channel (Kleptic, Geeves, Spammy).

I lose about 25% of sessions on average.

Chances of losing 6 sessions in a row, in this case the 6 sessions that comprise the final day of the last 6 months is :-

1/4^6 which is equal to 4095-1.

Lol? The anomaly ends way back in March and Febuary and January continue it. So one last day of the month this year I have actually won.

Someone suggested that there might be other factors like I try too hard on the final day to win and push things too hard but I don't believe that to be the case, certainly not today.

I am not looking for answers, just sharing the bullshit =)
