Fingerprint reader?

Fingerprint reader review

What about this for logging into poker sites? Would be so cute but I suspect it would be more annoying than useful. I'm not even sure it would work for poker sites, it seems to be hit and miss according to the review, doesn't work for firefox logins or even msn logins which is weird as it is a microsoft product.

Get it if you want to show off to your mates, I didn't get one but if you did let me know in comments your experiences =)

I used to have one of these things at my last job, and I can assure you that it is both a total pain in the ass, and practically useless.

First of all, if it functions anything like the one I used, you will be wasting alot of time trying to get past password screens that you are normally used to bypassing with a quick keyboard entry. The scanner technology is very sensitive to how you press your finger against the reader, so you have to press your finger on it the EXACT same way every time, apply the same amount of pressure in the same location, exactly, as when you first collaborated it. Most of the time it will take at least 2 or 3 bad reads before you get it right.

Then there is the issue of security, you think you would be installing to make it harder to access private, password protected functions, but really I think these things make it much easier to hack into someone's accounts. The problem is that these things are not naitivly supported by any operating systems, the way they work is the software will pop up any time a login/password situation comes up, then after a good read will pass the login and password saved in the scanner software to the program you are logging into. So all your passwords will be stored within the scanner software, and if that wasn't bad enough, I'm sure someone can and probably has written software that can catch the password as it passes from the scanner software to the login box you are trying to bypass.

I could recommend getting it if you are a gadget freak and want it just because you think it would be cool to get into your programs with a thumbscan, but right now they are worthless if you are looking to save time or add security to your PC.
